Pulverize Valentine’s Day
SNA (Tokyo) — Revolutionary Alliance of Unpopular People stands in solidarity against the greedy capitalism and discrimination of Valentine’s Day.
Narration: As shops and candy companies throughout Tokyo double down their efforts on Valentine’s Day 2018, the Revolutionary Alliance of Unpopular People stands in solidarity against what they see as greedy capitalism and discrimination. On the Monday before Valentine’s Day, around fifteen members of the Alliance, many donning masks and sunglasses, met in Yoyogi Park for an anti-Valentine’s Day demonstration. Under a banner exclaiming, “Pulverize Valentines Day!” members of the Alliance spoke over a loudspeaker about the manipulative nature of Valentine’s Day advertisements. The group specifically criticized Godiva, among other candy companies, for their attempts to make purchasing chocolate a romantic duty.
These protests have been occurring in Japan for the past ten years, but how is the movement really doing?
Organizer: It’s growing, I think.
